Guidelines for ERCIM News articles
Structure of the article
Below are some indications for preparing a contribution for ERCIM News.
Try to structure the article as follows :
-
Title
-
Author (full name, max. two or three authors)
-
Teaser:
(a few words about the topic, printed in bold face)
-
Details describing:
- what the project/product is
- who is involved
- where it takes place
- why the research is being done
- when it was started/completed
- the aim of the project
- the techniques employed
- the orientation of the project
- future activities
- other institutes involved in this project
- co-operation with other ERCIM members in this field
-
References:
1 - max. 3 references are mandatory, preferably important sources only, IEEE Citation Style
-
Useful Link(s): (URLs separated from the references)
-
Contact address:
- full name of author
- phone number
- e-mail address
-
Photos, illustrations:
ERCIM News is a full color print magazine. Each article should be accompagnied by an illustration
(photo, graphics) in jpg or tiff format in a resolution suitable for printing, graphics
in a vector format (svg, eps or ps).
This above structure should serve as a guide and it is not necessary to
follow it exactly. However, the introduction is very important and should
be a short abstract of the article itself. The reason for this is that it
will be printed in bold so that readers only need to read the first 2 or 3
lines before knowing whether or not your article is of interest to them.
Style : ERCIM News is read by a large variety of people. Keeping this in
mind the article should be descriptive without too much technical detail.
Length : Try to keep the article short, i.e..about 700-800 words.
Format : No formatting should be used as this will be done at a large
stage, i.e., pure text.
Additional items : The following should accompany the text :
-
full name of author with telephone number and e-mail address
-
any other contact people (names with telephone numbers and e-mail
addresses) the author wishes to specify.
-
a visually attractrive
photograph, plot, illustration, etc., to illustrate the article, if
possible. Photos could for example be of the product (e.g., screan display,
plot, machine,...), the people working on the project, or anything
interesting and preferably in colour with min. resolution 150 dpi.
ALL of the above must be accompanied by a caption.
-
a URL where more information on the topic is available.
