Muurspecht
In German, there is a word `Mauerspecht', meaning
`wall-woodpecker'. The word refers to those enthusiastic people who right
after the fall of communism set out to destroy the Berlin wall with hammers,
bare hands, and anything else they could use. The picture above shows a
different `mauerspecht'. It is a Great spotted woodpecker, actually, that
discovered that the new facade of our institute, which is still under
construction, is soft enough to drill a hole in. The round insets show the
bird just before it entered its roost hole as dusk. The pictures are not very
good since they are taken with a 200 mm lens under bad light conditions.
